  • The Court asked why the institution did not regulate TV News

The Bombay High Court on Monday asked the Central Government why there should not be any statutory body regulating the content transmitted through Television News Channels. The Court’s comments come in the backdrop of frenzied media coverage of actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. The court sought to know why the electronic media should have an open exemption in its coverage.

The High Court asked, is there any statutory system for (TV News) broadcasters? A bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Dutta and Justice GS Kulkarni said, “With the manner in which there is a Press Council of India for print media, why don’t you (Central Government) think of a similar council for electronic media?” Why should they have an open exemption? The bench was hearing a number of public interest petitions, urging the press and especially the TV News Channels to exercise restraint in the case of Sushant Singh Rajput’s death and the reporting of everything by various agencies.

Petitions have been filed by a number of retired police officers, activists and civilians and claimed that the press media is conducting a trial in the case, affecting a fair investigation into the case. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the Center, told the court that there is no such open examination for news channels. Anil Singh said, it is not that Government is not doing anything. He takes action on complaints. He said, but the Government cannot control everything. Freedom of the Press and its own rights.
